Welcome to the Hero’s Journey Radio Show! This is a community radio show hosted by the Taos Education & Career Center the last Tuesday of the month from 9-10 am on KNCE 93.FM. Nina Gonzales and Montserrat Oyanedel-Tolmo are the two radio hosts that give life to this incredible social experiment, that focuses on spreading the word about the amazing people that are part of our program and their educational journey. As guests, we had local and international (English as a Second Language) students, board members, volunteers, teachers, and community personalities that work with TECC.
Please listen some of the shows that we were able to record. We hope you enjoy them!
Freedom is defined from different aspects and according to different culture. Freedom varies with one culture to another. Some people take freedom lightly and some people value freedom greatly. Freedom allows each person the opportunity to make the decision that governs their life and make quality of life higher. It gives us that ability to pursue our dream. Since God gave us freedom for free we must do our best to maintain and keep these rights.
Freedom in the United States is the universal symbol. Out of the countries in the world, the U.S.A. is the one of the only nations where every individual is free. Nepal is a strongly caste system country. Nepali people don’t have many freedoms. They can’t express themselves. They can only “dream and hope.” What a life! I believe that everyone should be able to experience and live in a free nation at some point in their life. Unfortunately, Nepal is the opposite of this. They have to live under the government’s rules. The young Nepali people commonly try to change historical nonsense, but the worthless government gives them a hard time.
This kind of situation reminds me of the U.S.A.’s history, when the North vs South fought each other in the Civil War. Around the 18th century, the United States did horrible things to the African American people. Then in the 19th century, Abraham Lincoln become the 16th President of the United States. He opened the eye of the African American people. This is a great common history in the United States. The Civil Rights movement started during the period of the 1960s, with the core purpose of gaining equal rights for everyone. It was the biggest revolution in America and many people dedicated their lives to the success of this movement.
At that time, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King played a great role. Rosa Parks’ movement was one of the most successful mass movements against racial segregation in history. Martin Luther King had a “universal dream” for all, especially for the African American people. In those days, he was a leader of the African American Civil Rights movements. King used all his effort to promote the idea that African Americans are a part of America and should be given equal rights.
However, freedom is always interesting for people. The most important kind of freedom is to be who you really are. If you trade in your reality for a “role,” you give up your ability to be totally free. Everybody loves freedoms and everyone wants it. I think many people believe that freedom is the right to do whatever they want, as long as nobody is being hurt. People make a choice about the best decision. I suspect that freedom gives us the right to do at all times what is right, even sometimes at the expense of doing what we want.
